I Took Calcium Every Morning For Nine Years. Here's What Nobody Told Me.

Nine years of perfect compliance. Five scans, every one lower than the last. The answer had nothing to do with how much calcium I was taking.

I remember the exact moment, which is strange, because nothing actually happened. It was an ordinary Tuesday in October, and my granddaughter ran to the bottom of the stairs and put her arms up the way she always does. I heard myself say, in a bright voice that did not sound like mine, that Mormor would just hold the railing today.

She did not mind. She never does. I stood there holding the rail and understood that I had been saying no to things for two years without admitting it.

Nine years of doing everything right

I was 53 when a routine scan came back lower than it should have been. My doctor was kind about it. She said it was mild and normal for my age, that I should take calcium and vitamin D, walk daily, and come back in a couple of years.

So I did. I am not a casual person about these things. I read until I understood the difference between calcium carbonate and calcium citrate, and switched to citrate because it was meant to be gentler.

Then vitamin D3. Then K2 in the MK-7 form, then magnesium, then boron because a woman in a Facebook group swore by it, then collagen in my coffee.

Eleven bottles at the peak. Two of those weekly organisers with the little doors.

A note on the fridge about which ones could not be taken within two hours of my thyroid tablet. Roughly 1,300 kronor a month on a pension.

I walked. I bought a weighted vest and wore it on the morning loop. I ate sardines with the bones in them, twice a week, for four years.

And every scan came back lower than the last one.

Why nothing I added ever changed the number

There is a particular tiredness that comes from working hard at something and watching it not work. It is not sadness. It is the slow arrival of the idea that effort might not be the variable.

The tablets had also been quietly making my life worse. The carbonate ones left me so constipated that I came off them without telling my doctor. When I tried to make up for it with more milk, I was bloated all day.

At the appointment after my fifth scan my doctor reached for her prescription pad. I had read the leaflet by then — the jaw, and the dental work you cannot have while you are on it.

I said no. She was not unkind about that either. She simply said that if I would not take it, there was not much else.

So there I was. Nine years of perfect compliance, five scans going the wrong way, and the only thing left on the table was the one thing I had just refused.

Two months after switching, my morning stiffness was gone and I had given seven bottles to my sister. Ingrid, 66, retired district nurse, Malmö.

She says what still annoys her is that in thirty years of handing patients their calcium, nobody explained why so many kept getting worse.

The night I asked a different question

My mother broke her hip at 74. She did not fall down the stairs or slip on ice. She caught her foot on the edge of a rug in her own hallway.

She had the surgery and the rehabilitation, and she came home in a way that was not really coming home. She was gone inside two years. I have thought about that rug more than I have told anyone.

That October, after the stairs, I sat at the kitchen table at eleven at night and did something I had not done in nine years. I stopped asking what else I should be taking. I started asking why what I was already taking had never arrived.

What I found instead

Swallowing calcium and absorbing calcium turn out to be two different events, and almost nobody explains the gap.

When you take calcium as an isolated mineral in a tablet, it arrives in the small intestine on its own. In the conditions down there a large share of it binds up and falls out of solution, and the gut lining cannot take in what will not dissolve. What does not dissolve simply leaves.

It also gets less forgiving with age, as stomach acid declines. This does not get discussed much, partly because there is no prescription for it.

Put simply: for nine years I had been paying for bricks delivered to the wrong address.

Then I found the part that actually changed my mind. Calcium inside real milk never travels alone. As the milk's own proteins are digested they release short protein fragments called casein phosphopeptides, and their job is to bind to calcium and hold it dissolved, so it stays in a form the gut wall can actually take in.

The calcium arrives with an escort. And because it arrives inside a whole food, the phosphorus, magnesium and protein that bone is actually built from arrive with it, in the proportions milk provides them.

The problem was never how much calcium I was taking. It was that nothing was carrying it across.

The catch nobody mentions

My first thought was to simply drink more milk, which my stomach had already refused. My second was to buy a tin of milk powder at the supermarket.

Both of those run into the same wall. Almost all commercial milk powder is spray dried at high heat, and heat is exactly what those delicate proteins do not survive.

The bag still says milk. The part that does the carrying is gone.

Which is how I ended up looking for goat milk, dried at low temperature. Goat milk because of what it does for a stomach like mine: less lactose than cow's milk, smaller fat globules, and A2 protein rather than the A1 that had been bloating me.

The one I settled on is Suverta Organic Goat Milk Powder. One ingredient on the label, dried at low temperature rather than blasted with heat.

Eight months on

Two scoops in my coffee every morning. That is the entire routine, and the first fortnight felt like nothing at all.

What I noticed first was what stopped. No chalk. No bloating.

No note on the fridge about timing, because there is nothing to time.

Around the third week the stiffness I used to brace for when I stood up was simply less there. I wrote it down and did not trust it, which is what nine years teaches you.

In May I realised I had been kneeling in the garden bed for the better part of an hour without once thinking about getting back up. In August my granddaughter came at me full speed in the hallway and I caught her. I did not brace.

My next scan is in the spring and I will not pretend I know what it will say. I know that for the first time in nine years I am addressing the actual problem instead of adding a twelfth bottle. Check availability here.

The counter now: one bag and a spoon.

Eleven weeks in and no cramping at all, after years of coming off every calcium tablet I was given. Annelise, 64, Aarhus.

She had been certain dairy was finished for her. Her husband drinks it too and has never asked what is in the cup.

Three months in, I carried the shopping up two flights in one trip without planning it first. Lars-Erik, 68, Göteborg.

Nobody had ever suggested he get scanned, and his result came back worse than his wife's. He read the leaflet, put it back in the envelope, and went looking for something else.

A few things people ask me

Does it taste like goat cheese. No — that sharpness comes from high-heat handling, not from goat milk. In coffee it reads as a creamer.

Is it expensive. It replaced seven things on my counter, so for me it cost less than what it replaced.

Do I have to stop my vitamin D. No — it is a single-ingredient food, not another mineral tablet, and I kept my D3 as it was.

If you are where I was

I am not saying this will work the same for you. I am 62, I have one body, and one person's spring is not evidence.

But if you have been taking your calcium every morning and watching the number go the wrong way, I would want someone to tell you what nobody told me. You did not choose the wrong form. You did not miss the mornings.

It was arriving with nothing to carry it across, and no amount of discipline was ever going to change that.
